Do we expect too much from the current generation of goalkeepers?
Was watching some old Match of the Day and the Big Match highlights from the 80s the other day and so many of the goals conceded looked really soft and I am including the likes of Clemence, Shilton, Parkes, Grobalaer, Bailey etc.
Yet not any of them were suggested by the commentators as being errors.

Obviously with social media everything is magnified but are the goalkeepers of today any worse than those from the 70s and 80s?

Phil Parkes was in goal when I started following West Ham so I will always have an affection for him but some of the goals he conceded when I watch back my old end of season videos were really soft and would've come under massive scrutiny in this era.

Butland will go to a big or biggish team
Forster can’t get in Southampton’s team and has resembled a wardrobe being pushed over when I’ve seen him
Never rated Carson. Ordinary keeper who looks like Desperate Dan

So, none of those probably

At the moment 3 England keepers in Butland , Forster and Carson are in the relegation spots.
Presume we will find another free transfer or loan

Re: Do we expect too much from the current generation of goalkeepers?
There were a lot of good keepers back in the 80's who got nowhere near the England squad...

I always thought Steve Ogrizovic at Coventry was a decent no 1

Nigel Spink at Villa was another

Fucking defenders are atrocious these days, most goals conceded are the result of errors.
Joe Hart is fucking useless, period

The era of Clemence / Shilton / Corrigan and parkes was something else... not being funny but big Phil is the best I have ever seen over our place by a long way and he was our countries FOURTH choice... however I still say the best keeper I have seen over a short period was Nev Southall... he was on a different planet... remember Dickens scoring with a header v him and it was absolute shock that we had actually got a ball past him... the Big Dane (Schmeichel) is prob' the 2nd best I have seen

I never get why keepers don't catch the ball anymore as if you catch it that stops the attack. If you punch it, It usually ends up coming back again.

I agree about the need for keepers now to be able to have a far better kicking game but someonevlile Southall would have been world class whatever era he'd played in, and no doubt even better now given training methods and improved diet/fitness

Re: Do we expect too much from the current generation of goalkeepers?
When I watch old matches these days especially old Hammers games it is noticeable how the keepers used to catch the ball a lot more, holding a lot more shots it seems than the current crop who tend to parry a lot more. However that could be down to the fact it tends to be highlight of the old games we probably watch rather than full 90 minutes. Not sure how the old keepers would be able to play out of the back with their feet these days though, as much as I loved Parkesy I can't really see him deftly chipping it to Ray Stewart!!!

Re: Do we expect too much from the current generation of goalkeepers?
Think most of the keepers from the 70s and 80s would have struggled today. They would not have been big or athletic enough in the modern game.

Remember a debate on TalkSport where they said the arrival of Ludol was a real game changer. He heralded the change of a keeper to tall and athletic.

Clemence was average as soon as he went to Spurs and Bonetti would only be a Championship keeper.

I reckon Shilton would struggle also. He was too small to dominate his box even when he played.

A goalkeeper's lot has always been tough.

Pull off 6 miracle saves in a match and make one howler and we all know what you will be remembered for.

I don't think much has changed in what we expect from the modern day goalie.

Obviously he has to be comfortable on the ball compared to back pass days but now I think any howler is analysed in far more detail than it was in the 70's and 80's.

Think the same could be said of any player's mistake in any position but of course keepers are always on a hiding to nothing.

Linked with Sam Johnstone at the moment.

6 foot 4, 25 year old.

Good point V.

When Hart joined I thought we'd been very clever, that perhaps he'd had a blip but could go on to reach his peak with us, because historically goalkeepers have always peaked later than outfield players.

In reality, at the age of 30 his best years are probably behind him.

Re: Do we expect too much from the current generation of goalkeepers?
What do people make of David James?

Plenty of spectacular fuck-ups, but is that just the downside of a keeper who wanted to control his area, and probably prevented at least as many goals as he conceded by doing so?

A personally high-risk strategy, in that it makes you look a fool if it doesn't come off, but goals where you look a fool count exactly as much as the others.

Re: Do we expect too much from the current generation of goalkeepers?
Football has changed so much, back in the day someone who was 6 foot 4 would be a giant whereas today that would be average for a keeper.

I feel very few keepers from years ago would be as effective in the modern game with the rule changes and media coverage whereas I am sure most of today's keepers would find the olden days a doddle in comparison to play in.

Having said that Phil Parkes has been my favourite keeper of all time.
